January 2013

Minutes from January 2013 CRABS meeting
Date: Wednesday January 16, 2013
Place: Clipper City / Heavy Seas
  1. The National Homebrewers Conference is coming to Philly on June 27-29.  The host hotel will be officially announced on February 5 but rumor has it that it will be the Marriott.  Registration opens on February  It will sell out so register that day.  We will have a group brew in March/April to make beer for the event.  We will try to get Maryland clubs in the same area for Club Night.  The official site is http://www.ahaconference.org but there is no way to register until February 5.
  2. If you want to join the BJCP study group, see Don Zwach or Joe O'Keefe.  Class will start in late February and go until May, most likely on Sunday afternoons.  Location: MDHB.
  3. Max's Belgian Beer Fest will be February 15-18.  New this year: open through Monday instead of Sunday.  On Monday there will be dozens of American sours.
  4. Homebrew Hullabaloo will be held February 22.  There will be homebrew, live music, and burlesque.  The organizers' website is www.thosewhodig.net but at this time it has no info on this event.
  5. If you want to join the CRABS Facebook page, contact Jeff Adelsberger.
  6. This year is the Free State Homebrew Club Guild's 15th anniversary.  Some special events at the National Homebrewers Conference and elsewhere are in the planning stages.
  7. We might move Crabs4CRABS to a different date since attendance has been light, maybe because September is a very busy beer month.  Don has sent out an e-mail asking for feedback.
  8. Mini MASHOUT will happen again, probably in late April, at Grover's parents' place in Hampstead.  Dates and directions to be sent out in the coming months.
  9. Big Brew will be on May 4 at MDHB.
  10. The Guild summer picnic will be on Saturday June 8 at Patapsco State Park, Hollofield area, shelter 301, noon to dusk.  We will have the wheat beer contest again.
  11. The Brown Ale competition had 11 entries.  The winners were:
    • 5th - Michael Stuppy
    • 4th - Rob Farrell
    • 3rd - Jesse Kaiss
    • 2nd - Joe O'Keefe
    • 1st - Rob Kiernan
    • For some reason my Brett-infected beer didn't place.  Actually it did place -- last.
  12. Upcoming competitions: In February it'll be IPAs (see http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style14.php for style guidelines).  In March it's the Iron Chef competition, so don't forget to brew your kiwi agave beer ASAP unless you want me to win with my kiwi agave gueuze.
  13. Duclaw's Old Flame release is tonight, Thursday January 17, at the Arundel Mills location, starting at 6 PM.  It was last night too but most of us were otherwise occupied.
  14. All sorts of information can be found at the CRABS website: http://www.crabsbrew.org
